How To Transition Your Floppy Hat for Autumn

If you're anything like me you love a good floppy hat in the summer. There's really nothing comparable with it: it's chic, it's elegant, it's a statement piece with enough timeless elegance to not overwhelm an outfit. But as we climb into this Autumnal season, most of us have to put away our wide brimmed hats for knitted beanies and smaller hats. Charmante.

Nontheless, I'm a firm believer in making your closet work for you, and one of my favorite ways of doing that is making seasonal pieces work outside of their designated season. Floppy hats are no exception.

HOW TO WEAR A FLOPPY HAT IN AUTUMN/WINTER
 1. WEAR SPECIFICALLY AUTUMNAL CLOTHING
Make it obvious you know which season you currently live in. Work that sweater, scarf, flannel and coat.

2. DARK COLORS CREATE CONTRAST
Most floppy hats come in a variety of colors, including black, so a great way to transition is to buy a darker colored hat, a great contrast piece in the summer and seasonally appropriate in the winter.

3. TEXTURES ARE IMPORTANT
If your hat is of a lighter color or straw-like texture, work off that with heavier knits or tweed, woven or  woolen -like fabrics.

4. DARK LIPSTICK IS EVERYTHING
It could just be me (but I doubt it is) but there is something so fabulously chic about a large, heavy hat and some dark lipstick paired together. I'll be sharing my favorite Autumn lipsticks next week, so keep your eye out for that! - because there is such an air of mystery to this timeless combination.
