The Elegance Files, No. 12: A French Playlist for Your Summer Evenings

Just a little series on being elegant, from tips my mother taught me and beyond. Click here to read more from the archives...

There's something so je ne sais quoi about French music. I just love it! But admittedly, it's very hard to find songs you like; I know so little of the French music scene that when I wanted to listen to it I didn't even know where to begin. Word to the wise: searching "French music" in Google or Youtube does not come up with anything truly worthwhile. You know what does?

Pandora. I made a station from one of the few French artists I did know before I began my perusings, Coeur de Pirate, and from there began to branch out. That's not of course to say that I know anything vast about this best-kept-secret of the French, but there are a handful of songs I have discovered. And they just seem to bring in the breeze off the sea with them, listening to them in your kitchen with the windows open, and if you close your eyes you can almost envision yourself cooking by taste in a kitchen on a beach in Cannes. (Can you tell I have an active imagination?)

But whether you're flinging together a pâtes au fromage with efforless blasé, or just chopping some fresh vegetables in your kitchen at home, this French and French-inspired playlist, a mix of jazzy and upbeat, is one sure way to add a little more magic to your evening. And what's not elegant about that?

Bisous a tous. Xx

  1. I love French music(and most of the inspired-by music on this list)!! Try Francoise Hardy- she's my style icon and her music is beautiful.

  3. Oh. My. Word. I just started listening the first song on the list (because who doesn't like trying new music in foreign languages) and was sold after about 4 bars. Thanks for broadening my musical horizons!
