Moving On + Getting Over | #OOTD

One of my favorite statement pieces, especially in the winter when everything seems to be a monochrome mass of sweaters and jeans, is a long coat. But as a woman on the petite side of the scale, sometimes longer coats can make me look even shorter. Does that mean we throw out all long coats for lost if we're under 5'5"?

Of course not.

I think petite women can totally rock a long-line coat, but the key is how you wear it. Of course there are petite-made coats, but even those sometimes just aren't the most flattering silhouettes (the trench is an exception, because a well made trench looks good on just about everyone.) When shopping for and styling with cocoon-sized coats, there are 3 main things I like to keep in mind...

1. Length
If it's past the knee, pass it on. You don't want to loose your legs, which are the main factor in creating the illusion of height!

If you do truly want a duster-style coat, on the other hand (which are so elegant and on trend at the moment!) try leaving it open and/or tying it back behind you, to still allow for that leg-line to work in your favor.

2. Creating Balance
When a coat is oversized and looser, I like to balance it with something very fitted underneath. Typically, this means skinny jeans and a slim turtleneck (my go-to winter look), but you can play around with other methods of balance too! One of my favorite looks, actually, is the swing dress with over-the-knee boots/socks - by showing a little leg, you offset the conservative drape of the coat + also create that romantic silhouette.

3. Sleeve Length
This makes the biggest difference in whether or not a coat swallows you up as a shorter woman - pay attention to your sleeves! A basic sleeve-length alternation might be necessary, or even roll them up if you're lazy like I am and don't have time to get to a tailor (ha!). Bottom line: when they hang over your hand, that's usually what's making the coat look too big - not necessarily the rest of the coat structure. Roll your sleeve in a stylish cuff and see what a difference it makes.

Do you like long coats? What's your favorite way to style them?

p.s. laughing at myself for those dramatic hair-flips, so feel free to laugh along with me...😂
